Brac
Brac is the closest island to the beautiful city of Split and is one of the many Dalmatian islands that line the southern Croatian coast. There is a small airport but the main route to the island is via the small, bustling port of Supetar. This runs car ferries every hour, day and night, to Split which takes 40 minutes and is very cheap. A foot-passenger Fast Cat has recently opened running direct from Milna to Split. From Split there are numerous ferry routes to other Dalmatian islands should you want to visit them. Brac can be driven across in approximately 2 hours and there are good bus networks if you do not have a car.
Brac is home to the most famous beach in Croatia, Zlatni rat (golden cape) and this is the largest centre from which to hire windsurfing and kite surfing equipment. Bicycles, boats and canoes can be hired easily from many of the towns and there are also several dive centres and tennis courts around the island. Culturally there are plenty of beautiful churches and monasteries and Brac is home to the impressive Hermitage of Blaca, which was built into the rock in 1588 by monks fleeing the Turks and can only be reached by foot, the paths accessed either by boat or by dusty track.
